Chapter 84: A Sin or a Blessing in Disguise

The corridor seemed to shrink around them, heavy with unspoken fear and tension, the air thick with the scent of dust and candle smoke.
Rita’s trembling hands clutched the bundle of clothes; Munni’s tiny fingers curled around her saree, her sobs bouncing off the cold walls of the haveli.

Rajveer’s gaze locked onto Rita’s pale, desperate face.

For a heartbeat, he stood frozen; for a heartbeat, rage, fear, and memory collided behind his eyes.

“Rita…” His voice was low, dangerous, carrying a flicker of disbelief. She flinched, the bundle slipping slightly.

“Thakur Shahab… please… I—” Her voice cracked, but Rajveer’s narrowed eyes stopped her.

“Step inside,” he said, sharper this time as other servants' eyes followed his voice, cutting through the murmurs of the courtyard. “Now.”

Rita hesitated.

Every instinct screamed to obey, but something in her chest—the mix of fear, pride, and terror tangled within her, rooting her to the spot.

Munni whimpered beside her.

Aditya stepped forward, about to place a gentle hand on her shoulder. He stopped as Rajveer’s eyes narrowed in warning. "It’s alright. Please… just do as Bhai says.”

Rita met Aditya’s eyes.

No scolding, no anger—just worry.

For her.

Rajveer stepped closer, flicking from Munni, to the bundle, to Rita’s face. “What is this?” His voice was low, barely controlled.

Rita swallowed, her lips trembling. “It… it’s everything… my home, my things… I—I can’t stay here… not after everything.”

“Your things?” Rajveer’s eyes narrowed, a flicker of disbelief crossing them. “You’re leaving?”

“Yes… I… I must. For Munni,” she whispered. “I don’t deserve your kindness, Thakur Shahab. I’ve sinned, yet still rely on your generosity. I can’t stay here, facing you every day, knowing what I’ve done.”

Rajveer’s chest tightened. "Rita… I know what you did, but we haven’t discussed it. How can you decide on your own?”

She looked down, afraid. “…I don’t know… but my heart won’t let me stay, Shahab.”

"Maa…no… This is our home," Munni cried, tears streaming down her face as she pulled Rita's saree.

Rajveer's heart clenched seeing the 4-year-old so distraught, his chest tightening, a sharp pang of helplessness stabbing him.

“Rita?” Rajveer stepped forward. The fire in his eyes burned hotter. “…Leave now… take Munni. Don’t drag your child into your mistakes. I will not allow it.”

“No!” Rita’s head snapped up, her chest heaving, eyes wide. “It’s not that! It’s… it’s everything. The whispers… the eyes… the shame… I—”

Aditya stiffened. He’d seen the panic in her, his chest tightening at the raw fear radiating from her. "Rita… What sin do you carry?"

Rajveer’s fingers flexed at his side, eyes never leaving her.

Meenal, who was standing beside and watching the exchange, spoke softly, "Rita…you are not leaving.”

Rita's eyes widened. “I… I must. My heart won’t let me remain another moment."

Rajveer’s voice dropped, soft but deadly. "Rita, you have committed one dishonorable act. But running away will not erase your guilt. Take your things and go to your room. Now."

Rita shook, silent. She had never seen him like this. Not calm. Not raging. Not protective. Not human… not before her trembling eyes.

“Aditya,” Rajveer said without looking at him, “see that she doesn’t leave. Understand?”

Aditya nodded, his heart tightening at the weight of the command. Protecting her was no longer instinct—it was an order he could not disobey.

Munni clutched her mother tighter, whimpering, her sobs punctuating a racing heartbeat.

Rita’s lips trembled as tears welled.

Rajveer finally exhaled. “Bring her inside,” he said quietly, almost to himself. “Inside. Now. I don't want more eyes to question what is happening here."

Rajveer's eyes turned to the horizon, a storm brewing in the distance. "This isn’t the first time whispers have ruined a life beneath these cold walls."

Rita hesitated. Aditya gave her a small, reassuring nod. She obeyed, stepping forward with Munni.

Aditya led them silently… his presence a shield.

Meenal followed closely behind, her eyes darting around nervously. With her hand on her growing belly, confused and afraid, she realized that if not for Rita’s mistake, this baby wouldn’t exist. Her protectiveness surged, knowing this wrong had brought them all to this moment.

So was Rita a sinner or a thread whose one mistake had woven their fates together in an unexpected way?

Was it a sin or a blessing in disguise?
