Chapter 83: Between Brothers

Aditya stepped into the corridor, heart still pounding.

The door clicked shut behind him—a soft sound, but it echoed through Rita’s bones like thunder.

Rajveer stood only a few feet away—waiting.

Still.

Expression carved into stone.

Hands clasped behind his back like a king about to deliver a verdict.

The lamp beside him flickered, throwing shadows across his face, sharpening every line of anger he was trying—and failing—to control.

“Bhai,” Aditya started, voice low.

“Not here.”

Rajveer’s tone cut through the air.

He turned and walked toward the empty sitting room, jhutis striking the floor with controlled force.

Aditya followed, dread coiling in his chest.

He didn’t look back.

If he did, he knew he would see Rita’s terrified silhouette behind that door.

Inside the Room.

The door shut.

Rajveer did not sit.

He remained standing in the center of the room, the air around him scorching with restrained fury.

“Do you know what the servants are saying?” he asked quietly.

His quiet was worse than shouting.

Aditya hesitated. “…No.”

“That a widow fell into your arms,” Rajveer continued.

“That you held her. Comforted her. Touched her.”

Aditya felt the floor shift beneath him.

“Bhai, it wasn’t—”

“I don’t want excuses.”

Rajveer’s voice dropped, sharp as a blade.

“I asked you a question. Did you or did you not touch her?”

A hard swallow scraped down Aditya's throat.

“Yes,” he said.

“By mistake. I startled her.”

Rajveer’s jaw tightened. “And that is exactly the problem.”

He stepped closer, so close Aditya could feel the heat of his anger.

“You are not a boy,” Rajveer said.

“You know how people speak. How they twist. How a woman’s life becomes dirt while a man walks away clean.”

Aditya clenched his fists. “I wasn’t thinking of society. I was thinking of—”

“Of her?” Rajveer’s voice cracked. “Of a servant? A widow?”

“That’s not fair,” Aditya said quietly.

“No.”

Rajveer’s breath shook.

“It’s not. Nothing about life in this haveli has ever been fair.”

There it was.

The old ache.

The wound he never spoke of.

Aditya softened. “…Bhai—”

“Tell me the truth,” Rajveer demanded, eyes piercing through him.

“Was she scared when she fell? Or was she…something else?”

Aditya went rigid, breath locking in his chest.

He remembered Rita’s trembling breath.

Her panic.

Her shame.

“She was scared,” he said firmly.

“Terrified.”

“Then why,” Rajveer whispered, “did she not look scared?”

Aditya froze. “What?”

Rajveer looked away, jaw hardening.

“I saw her eyes,” he said. “I saw both of yours.”

Aditya exhaled sharply. “Bhai, stop. This is not what you think—”

“You think I don’t know,” Rajveer snapped, voice breaking for the first time.

“I have lived long enough to know when a man looks at a woman like she is something he wants to save, even if it ruins him.”

Aditya went still.

Rajveer stared at him.

“You care for her,” he said quietly. “More than you should.”

Aditya didn’t answer.

But in Aditya’s heart, there had only ever been one woman—Meenal.

No one else.

Silence stretched between them—raw, painful, heavy.

Rajveer whispered, voice trembling with something dangerous:

“I will not let you destroy yourself the way…” He stopped, breath hitching. “…the way someone else once did.”

Aditya’s eyes widened. “Bhai… who?”

But Rajveer shut down again.

“That is not your burden,” he said stiffly. “Your burden is this: From now on, you will not be alone with her. Do you understand me?”

Aditya flinched.

“Bhai—”

“Do. You. Understand?”

A storm raged inside Aditya, but he bowed his head.

“…Yes.”

Rajveer inhaled, steadying himself.

“And she will remember her place,” he added softly, “I will speak to her.”

Aditya snapped his head up. “No! Please don’t—”

Rajveer’s gaze turned icy.

“Are you protecting her now?”

Aditya froze.

He knows his brother cares for him.

The fear in his voice had betrayed everything.

Rajveer took a step closer, eyes burning.

“Always remember,” he said softly, “You’re a Thakur Aditya, even your single breath never goes unnoticed, and Rita’s shadow will ruin you.”

Rajveer’s voice dropped to a whisper. "And your shadow will taint a widow like her who has no man beside her."

“Aditya.” He stared into his brother’s eyes. “Even if your actions were innocent, the world only needs a whisper to turn innocence into sin.”

Aditya’s throat tightened.

And then—

A knock sounded at the door.

Sharp.

Urgent.

Both brothers turned.

Meenal’s voice trembled from outside.

“Thakur Shahab… please. You need to see this.”

Rajveer’s expression changed instantly.

Not softer.

But alert.

He walked to the door, opened it—

And froze.

Aditya stepped beside him.

Rita stood at the end of the corridor, pale as death, Munni clinging to her leg, sobbing.

Her hands were carrying a bundle of clothes, and Munni was crying. “Maa....No..,”

Rita’s eyes lifted to Rajveer’s.

Terrified.

Broken.

And begging.

😈 Devil’s Note 💋

Rajveer. Aditya. Rita. Each step, each glance, each whispered word… the walls themselves seemed to hold their breath. 😰
