Chapter 82: Not Against Him.

Rita’s breath trembled in her chest.

The words sat on her tongue like poison

I did something unforgivable.

She wanted to spit them out.

She wanted to confess.

She wanted to curl up and disappear.

But the fear of one more person hating her was something she couldn’t bear

She couldn’t say it.

Not yet.

Not when the truth might destroy more than her own life.

Aditya waited.

His breath uneven.

Eyes searching her face like he could pull the truth from her expression alone.

“Rita?” he whispered again.

She shook her head, backing into the wall until the cold plaster pressed into her spine.

“Please… don’t ask,” she begged.

“It is better if you don’t know, sahib.”

Aditya’s jaw tightened. Frustration, guilt, and helplessness battled behind his eyes.

“You think this is just about me wanting to know?” he said softly, voice breaking.

“Rita… if something is threatening you or Munni— I need to know.”

Her throat closed.

She turned away.

“You can’t help,” she whispered.

“Not with this. Not against him.”

A sharp intake of breath.

“Against Bhai?”

His voice was barely audible.

Rita flinched.

She didn’t answer.

Her silence was enough.

******

Meanwhile Downstairs…

A heavy thud echoed as Rajveer slammed the courtyard gate shut.

Meenal stood near the window, flinching at the sound.

He was moving through the haveli like a storm, looking for something to destroy.

A servant passed too close, but he stepped back, terrified.

Another dropped a brass plate.

Rajveer didn’t yell.

Didn’t raise a hand.

But the look he cast was enough to freeze everyone in their tracks.

Meenal approached slowly.

“Thakur Shahab…” she whispered.

He didn’t stop.

Didn’t look at her.

Just walked straight past, heading toward the stairs with a determined, almost frightening precision.

“Where are you going?” she asked, heart pounding.

“To speak to Aditya.”

Her stomach tightened.

“Please don’t… not when you’re angry.”

Rajveer paused.

Half-turned.

His voice dropped to a dangerous calm.

“If a servant thinks she can use my brother to gain sympathy, then I will remind both of them what boundaries are.”

“She fell into his arms, Meenal.”

His voice cracked, quieter but raw.

“You didn’t see how close they were. How he held her.”

Meenal swallowed hard.

“That does not mean—”

“You didn’t see her eyes,” he said.

“They weren’t scared. They were… something else.”

Meenal stepped closer, placing a hand on his arm.

“What you saw… may not be what is true.”

“Or maybe it is,” he countered.

His hand clenched.

“I raised that boy like my own son, Meenal,” Rajveer whispered, the truth slipping out before he could stop it. “I cannot— I will not let society destroy him.”

“I will not allow history to repeat old mistakes.”

Meenal froze.

A beat.

A long, chilling beat.

“What mistakes?” she whispered.

Rajveer turned his gaze away.

“That’s between brothers.”

But the words hung heavy.

Too heavy.

****

Aditya stepped closer to Rita despite everything in him telling him to turn away.

“Rita,” he murmured, “you are trembling.”

She pressed her head against the wall, eyes shut tightly.

If Thakur Shahab casts me out, I’ll survive," she whispered. "But Munni… would not.

Her voice shattered.

Aditya’s chest tightened painfully.

“I won’t let anything happen to her,” he said.

“You can’t promise that,” Rita replied, shaking her head.

“You are the Thakur’s younger brother. I am just a servant.”

“And yet,” he said softly, “you fear losing your child more than you fear losing your life.”

Her lips parted, stunned.

Aditya hesitated… then added in a voice barely audible,

“That makes you braver than anyone in this haveli.”

Rita’s breath hitched.

She didn’t want his kindness.

Not when it made everything harder.

“Leave, sahib,” she whispered.

“Please. Before someone sees.”

But fate had other plans.

A sound echoed from the corridor.

A footstep.

Heavy.

Controlled.

Aditya stiffened instantly.

Rita’s hand flew to her mouth.

The shadow outside the door grew larger.

He was coming.

Rajveer.

Rita’s heart pounded so loudly she felt it in her throat.

Aditya stepped toward the door, ready to face his brother.

Rita stumbled back, clutching her pallu with trembling fingers.

Outside, the footsteps stopped.

Silence.

Then.....“Aditya.”

Rajveer’s voice.

Calm.

Cold.

Deadly.

“Step outside. Now.”

Aditya inhaled slowly, meeting Rita’s terrified eyes.

“It’s alright,” he whispered.

But they both knew, It wasn’t.

He turned the handle.

Opened the door.

And stepped into the storm waiting on the other side.

😈 Devil’s Note 💋

Ohhh my trembling sinners…

Did you feel the walls closing in tonight?

Rajveer’s anger.
Rita’s fear.
Aditya’s helplessness.
Meenal’s heartbreak.

Every corner of this haveli is cracking… and the cracks are starting to whisper.

Tell me—
did your breath stutter when Rita said, “Not against him”?
Did your stomach drop when Rajveer said, “Step outside. Now.”?

Because that wasn’t anger.
That was a man standing on the edge of history…
and ready to break everything to stop it from repeating.

Who do you think shatters first?

The brother?
The servant?
The wife?
Or the Thakur himself?

Speak, sinners.
I’m listening. 👀💋
