The night hung heavy. Moonlight spilled across the room, soft and silver, pooling over the cot where Arun slept, his tiny hand curled against the pillow.

Meenal sat stiffly against the headboard, pulse quick and uneven. She could still feel the ghost of Rajveer’s hand against hers and the question that had lodged in her chest: May I sleep here tonight?

And now… here he was.

Rajveer moved like a man trespassing on sacred ground, each step measured, each breath too loud in the silence. He lowered himself onto the far side of the bed, every movement careful and deliberate.

The mattress dipped beneath his weight. The shift of space between them—five years of silence narrowing to the width of a handspan—made her skin prickle with heat.
