The meal ended in soft laughter, Arun still perched happily between them, crumbs on his lips and chapati pieces scattered around his little hands. For once, the haveli seemed kind—its long corridors carrying Arun’s laughter instead of swallowing it.

But when Arun ran off with a maid, chasing after the promise of kheer, the air shifted again. Without his chatter, Rajveer and Meenal were left staring at the same plate between them—half-eaten, untouched since that one forbidden bite.

Meenal rose quickly, brushing her hands against her sari as though she could erase the moment. “I’ll see to the kitchen—”
