✨ Chapter 70: I Created the Darkness
Inside, the silence finally felt like peace.
But the peace of one is a trauma for another.
Rita pressed herself closer to the wall, every muscle taut. The voices inside were soft, but each word struck her like a knife hidden in silk.
“Because trust isn’t built on memory,” Rajveer said. His voice was steady, calm—unwavering.
It’s built on faith. And I have never doubted what’s in you—or who you are.”
Rita’s fingers trembled. She gripped the pitcher; her nails dug into the copper. What did I do?
I tried to destroy something so pure. If that night Chhotey Sahab had drunk that milk, she could have never forgiven herself.
She shifted, careful not to make a sound, and saw Meenal lift the torn paper boat, sunlight glinting off its curled edges.
Each small gesture reminded her of what she’d tried to destroy.
“Then let me name it for you,” Rajveer whispered. “It was love, Meenal—not perfect, not clear, but real. Dream or memory, it doesn’t matter; a part of you will always be mine. And that will never change.”
Her chest ached; she wanted to scream, to tell them it was all her fault—but fear rooted her to the corridor. The pitcher slipped slightly in her grasp, and she froze, praying the sound would go unnoticed.
Arun’s small footsteps echoed faintly, like a soft warning. The boy paused in the doorway, holding the jasmine garland he had strung the day before. Rita imagined him seeing her, the shadowed figure she had become, and she shivered. She couldn’t face his innocence; it mirrored everything she’d misunderstood.
Her mind raced. I meant only to protect, only to help, only to prevent—but what had I prevented? Nothing but their trust, their happiness, their calm.
From the room ahead, Meenal’s voice trembled softly.
“If that’s true… then this child isn’t proof of sin. It’s proof that even in the dark, something remembered the light.”
Rita’s stomach knotted. I created this darkness. I am the storm that hid their light.
She sank into the shadows, the jasmine heavy around her… Her heartbeat throbbed like molten lead.
The haveli around her seemed to pulse with the quiet, perfect harmony she could not touch, the love that was about to be destroyed even before it bloomed.
And then she whispered, barely audible, almost to herself.
“I am the sinner in all this mess. It was me who made Thakurain doubt herself. I am the one who brought this curse upon them." Tears welled in her eyes as she realized the extent of her actions.
She lingered a moment, listening—the air thick with unspoken forgiveness, heavy with jasmine. Then, like a shadow slipping from the light, she retreated silently into the corridor.
The haveli’s quiet seemed heavier now, almost aware of her presence, and the jasmine still drifted in, sweet and suffocating. The storm she birthed had spared them—but it still knew her name.
"Soon… it will reach me. And take me with it, just as I deserve."
😈 Devil’s Note 💋
Ah, my loves…
Did you feel that shift tonight? The quiet that once healed now hurts. 🌒
Rita didn’t mean to create the storm — but she did. And now she’s standing in the wreckage of her own making, choking on the scent of jasmine that once meant forgiveness.
She wanted to protect them… but in trying to guard their love, she buried her own peace.
It’s strange, isn’t it? How the same silence that comforted Meenal now devours Rita alive. The same haveli, the same morning light — but one heart reborn, another ruined.
Tell me, my loves… do you pity her?
Or do you think she deserves what’s coming?
💬 Drop your thoughts below — I want to know what you felt in that corridor with her.
Could you forgive Rita if you were Meenal? Or would you let the storm take her? 🌧️
Until next time — keep your hearts steady. The light is fading again…
