Chapter 32 – Shadows Don’t Stay Buried
The night held its breath.
The banyan outside stood still. Even the street dogs had gone mute. Only the curtains whispered—fabric brushing fabric—as if afraid to be heard.
Nandini lay still, her fingers curled tight into the edge of the bedsheet.
She couldn’t sleep. Not with that fire behind her eyes.
Her body still ached. But it was her mind that refused to rest.
A child.
Rajeev had gone downstairs to heat milk on the sigdi. Or maybe he’d stepped out to get more wood. Time had lost shape. Only the memory pulsed behind her eyes like fire.
Vikrant’s voice, colder than the wind. A whisper at her ear. Fingers that clamped, then vanished. The scream caught in her throat—unspent, unfinished, unforgettable.
She turned away from the window, breath shallow. Her palm hovered just above her stomach.
It didn’t feel like hers.
Not yet.
Not when it might be his.
Down in the courtyard, Rajeev stood beside the brass bucket, dipping his hands in the cold water.
The vaid’s words echoed in his ears.
"It’s too early to say much. But Nandini's health is a concern. We must keep a close eye on her. Or the baby might be at risk." Rajeev's heart sank as he watched the water ripple, his mind filled with worry for Nandini and the unborn child. That's not his blood.
He looked up at the dark sky. No stars tonight.
Just emptiness and uncertainty. Rajeev knew he had to be strong for Nandini, no matter what the future held.
He closed his fist, knuckles whitening against the bucket’s rim…
He doesn't know what hurts more: the fact that she's pregnant with someone else's child or the possibility of losing her and the baby. He took a deep breath, steeling himself for the challenges ahead.
He dipped his head in the bucket and splashed water on his face, trying to clear his mind. The only thing that mattered now was keeping Nandini safe.
She was his wife—not by force, not by fate, but by some quiet thread that still held. When he saw her lying on the ground with blood trickling down her face from her forehead, his heart clenched in fear. He didn't care about anything—her past or the circumstances of their marriage; all he cared about was her well-being and safety.
But Vikrant's lurking presence in the shadows reminded him that danger was always close by. He had to stay vigilant and protect Nandini at all costs.
Raghav is returning home tomorrow, and Rajeev knows only his brother has the skills and resources to help keep Nandini safe from Vikrant's threats.
Upstairs, Nandini pushed off the blanket.
Something was calling to her.
She crossed to the wooden cupboard and opened the bottom drawer. Her hands dug past neatly folded sarees and stacked glass bangles. Her fingers stopped on something cold.
The silver kada.
Not hers.
Vikrant’s.
The one she always kept despite the trauma and insults it represented. She shivered, realizing the danger she was in and the lengths Vikrant would go to in order to control her.
But no longer could she allow herself to be a victim.
She gripped it.
She took it outside. The moonlight illuminated the courtyard as if mocking her past fears and insecurities. But then her eyes landed on a rock at the edge of the garden, and she knew what she had to do.
The rock waited.
CLANG.
The kada cracked.
Again.
CLANG.
Her hand split. The blood joined the metal.
CLANG.
With every blow, she didn’t just break the bangle—she cracked the silence wide open.
"Not anymore…" she whispered, feeling a sense of empowerment she hadn't felt in years. She knew that from now on, she would never allow anyone to manipulate her again.
She slammed it again and again until the metal was completely destroyed, until marks of her struggle were etched into the rock, a reminder of her strength and determination.
Blood ran down her wrist, warm and real—unlike anything else in her world. With each strike, she felt a weight lifting off her shoulders, knowing she was finally free from the chains of oppression.
Breaking free from the lies, from the fake love, and from the people who sought to control her every move.
“You destroyed the kada… But what will the child growing inside you do now?” Words echoed in her mind as she continued to chip away at the rock, her resolve wavering.
As she fell on the ground, her hand moving to her stomach, she felt nothing, but there was life growing inside her, a reminder of the sins she had committed and the consequences she would have to face. A child that is not her husband's but a mark of her past she couldn't undo, a child that would forever tie her to the lies and deception she had tried so hard to escape. The weight of her actions settled heavily on her shoulders as she realized the gravity of the situation she now found herself in.
The rock felt heavier now. Or maybe it was just her guilt, settling like ash.
She looked down at her stomach—silent, stubborn, still.
She felt nothing. Yet life moved inside her, indifferent to her ache.
A life. Not a choice.
She closed her eyes.
Raised the stone.
And brought it down.
Then—silence. Not even a breath.

✨ Author’s Note ✨
This chapter was heavy—emotionally, morally, spiritually. If it stirred something painful or raw inside you, I want to say this clearly:
I’m sorry if it triggered you. Please take care of your heart. 💔
Nandini’s silence finally shattered tonight. And sometimes, breaking a symbol—like a kada—is the first step to breaking a cycle.
But healing isn’t neat. It’s bloody, painful, and often lonely.
And now… she’s at a crossroads where her choices and the consequences of others collide in the most devastating way.
👉 If you felt for her, if you hated what happened, or if you’re rooting for her—I want to hear from you.
