Chapter 47: Whispers in the Courtyard
The courtyard lay shrouded in shadows, night thick and heavy with the scent of jasmine and damp earth. A single oil lamp flickered on the verandah, casting trembling light across the mud walls. The distant lowing of cows and the occasional bark of a village dog punctuated the stillness.
Rajeevās hand tightened over Nandiniās as they crouched together near the doorway. The bitter trace of tobacco lingered in the air, drifting from some unseen corner, and the soft creak of a floorboard made them both flinch.
āStay close,ā he whispered, his voice barely stirring the night. āI can feel him⦠even without seeing him.ā
Nandini nodded, her fingers clutching his sleeve. Her heart racedānot just for herself, but for Sobha. The thought of her sister-in-law alone, navigating the danger that lurked in the name of husbands like Virkant, sent a shiver down her spine. Rajeev squeezed her hand reassuringly.
A subtle movement in the corner of the courtyard caught Nandiniās eyeāa shadow sliding along the edge of the bamboo fencing. Her breath hitched. āVirkantā¦?ā she murmured.
Rajeevās eyes narrowed. āNot him,ā he said softly. āSobha.ā
Sobha emerged from the darkness, her shawl clinging to her like a second skin in the cold night air. Her steps were quiet but deliberate, carrying the calm assurance of someone who had made a choice. In her hands, she held a folded note and a small, polished key.
She slipped the note beneath the corner of the verandah mat and quietly set the key on the ledge of the courtyard well. Before anyone could react, she vanished into the shadows.
Nandini bent down, her fingers trembling as she retrieved the note. Written in Sobhaās familiar script was a single line:
āWait for the signal. He cannot see me, but I can see everything. Trust me.ā
Rajeev read it aloud, his jaw tightening. āSheās risking herself to keep Virkant in check⦠and to protect us all. That key⦠it must be for something inside the houseāa tool for her plan.ā
A sudden rustle of leaves made them both freeze. The scent of tobacco grew stronger, closer. Rajeevās hand brushed Nandiniās, a silent anchor. The oil lamp flickered violently, casting shadows that danced across the walls like silent watchers.
āWhatever sheās planning,ā Rajeev murmured, āwe need to be ready. Sobhaās strong⦠but sheās not invincible.ā
The lampās light caught a glint at the edge of the verandaāa small metallic shimmer. Nandini realized it was the key, left intentionally as a signal. Sobha was already moving ahead, setting the stage for her first step against Virkant.
Outside, a dog barked sharply. A shadow shifted near the fence. For a heartbeat, Nandiniās imagination ran wild with Virkantās possible stepsābut the darkness revealed nothing. Only whispers of movement, the faintest scrape of bamboo, and Sobhaās careful preparation.
āBreathe,ā Rajeev instructed softly. āWe wait. And we watch. Sobha has a plan, and so do we. The night is long, but itās ours to endure.ā
Somewhere, beyond the mud walls and bamboo fencing, a plan was taking shape. Sobha was moving in silence, weaving her weapon of revenge with patience. And the reckoning, though still hidden in shadow, was inching closer. The night is long, but itās ours to endure. We will emerge victorious in the end.
