Chapter 49: The Predator’s Smile
Rajeev’s chest tightened as Vikrant’s words echoed in the darkness. “Come out, Rajeev.” Every instinct screamed at him to move, to vanish, to pull Sobha with him—but his feet stayed rooted, as if the earth itself had conspired to hold him still.
Sobha’s eyes met his, a silent challenge burning in their depths. She didn’t flinch. She didn’t hesitate. That stubborn defiance only made Rajeev’s gut twist further—he had always known she was fearless, but tonight, the stakes were far higher than he’d ever imagined.
And then it hit him. Nandini.
His heart lurched. I shouldn’t have left her alone.
What if, Vikrant, it was Vikrant's plan to separate them, to distract him with Sobha while he went after Nandini? Rajeev's mind raced with fear and guilt as he realized the danger Nandini might be in, all because of his hesitation. With a newfound determination, he finally broke free from the earth's hold and ran towards where he had left Nandini, praying it wasn't too late.
All the reasoning he had whispered to himself—Sobha is stronger, I’ll follow her, it’s safer this way, she can handle it—crumbled into bitter self-reproach. He had convinced himself it was the right choice, that staying behind would only slow Sobha down. But now, the heavy weight of responsibility pressed down on him. Nandini, defenseless, pregnant, and somewhere within Vikrant’s reach… and he had been too blind to notice.
Yes, his mother and father are home, but they don't know Vikrant's evil intentions.
Vikrant’s cruel, measured steps echoed through the alley, each one like a drumbeat on Rajeev’s guilt. The lantern in Vikrant’s hand swung lightly, casting jagged shadows that danced across the walls, over the uneven bamboo fencing, and finally across Rajeev’s frozen form.
“You’ve been hiding,” Vikrant’s voice slithered through the darkness, low and amused. “Watching, waiting… thinking yourself clever. But cleverness only lasts as long as ignorance.”
Rajeev swallowed hard. The knot in his stomach tightened. Sobha’s fists clenched at her sides, fire coiled in her every movement. Yet his mind couldn’t let go of Nandini. She was here, somewhere—trapped, unseen, relying entirely on him and Sobha without a chance to protect herself.
“Where… where is she?” Sobha demanded, voice sharp but controlled.
Vikrant’s laugh rolled through the alley, humorless and deadly. “Relax. She’s safe… for now. But don’t think for a moment that safety means freedom. Every move she makes, every breath, is under my watch.”
Rajeev’s chest tightened. His own choice—the choice to follow Sobha and leave Nandini behind—was responsible for this. The cold rage and guilt coiled inside him like a living thing. He wanted to act, to move, to throw himself between them—but he knew one wrong step could cost everything.
Sobha stepped forward, merging her shadow with Rajeev’s in the lantern light. “If you think fear will keep me from stopping you… "You are very wrong,” she said. Her voice was low, sharp, and steady. “Why are you after Nandini? Is it because she's happy or because she found a better man than you?"
Vikrant stood frozen, his heart pounding in his chest. Sobha's words cut through him like a knife, exposing the raw truth of his jealousy and regret. He loves no one, neither Sobha nor Nandini, but still he is consumed by his own insecurities and the fear of losing control.
Vikrant tilted his head, studying her. “Brave… but so predictably reckless. And the other one—your companion, Rajeev… he has no idea what the night holds. Such innocence makes betrayal all the sweeter.”
Rajeev’s mind screamed. He had been blind. Nandini’s safety was in jeopardy because he had thought following Sobha was the best plan. Now, fear for her life tangled with his helplessness, tightening his chest and clouding his judgment.
The alley seemed to shrink around them. Shadows deepened, the moon hidden behind drifting clouds, and the night carried the quiet hum of tension—each second stretching impossibly long. Vikrant’s deliberate steps closed the distance between predator and prey.
“You should have stayed in the shadows,” Vikrant whispered, now just a few paces away. “But no… You needed to see it all, to feel it… to understand who truly holds power here.”
Sobha’s shoulders squared. Her courage shone in the darkness, but Rajeev couldn’t shake the guilt pressing at his chest. He had left Nandini alone—his inattention, his pride in following Sobha, had put her in harm’s way.
Then, without warning, Vikrant stopped. The lantern light flickered against the bamboo, revealing his face partially—half-hidden in shadow, half-illuminated, the cruel curve of his lips promising torment.
“Let’s see how brave you really are,” he murmured. “Let’s see… who bleeds first.”
A rustle of leaves in the darkness made Rajeev whip his head toward the source—but nothing moved. Yet, his gut told him Nandini was close, trapped, her presence hidden but very real. I have to protect her… I have to protect them both.
Vikrant’s gaze locked onto Rajeev, sharp and unyielding. “Come forward. Or do you plan to hide in the dark while others face the consequences?”
Rajeev’s jaw tightened. Every instinct screamed to move, to act—but Sobha’s glance stopped him by her hand signal. She was the storm; he was the shadow. And in that moment, he realized they could only win if they played the game on Vikrant’s terms… for now.
The night stretched on, heavy with anticipation, and somewhere in the invisible folds of darkness, Nandini waited—trapped, silent, her fate entwined with theirs.
And Vikrant… Vikrant was smiling.
“Ah… right on time,” he whispered to himself, the sound floating like a death sentence through the alley.
